The Wolf Is Coming!

Play and mischief come naturally to children. But they should never bring pain or sorrow — to oneself or to anyone else. Mischief and joking have a limit, and one must know that crossing that limit invites real danger. You may have heard of people who told lie after lie to make fools of others, and ended up bringing disaster on themselves. The story ‘The Wolf Is Coming!’ shows exactly such an episode.
A shepherd boy raises a false alarm twice for the fun of it — and finds no one believes him when the wolf really comes.
In a certain village there lived a boy.
Every day he went to the forest to graze the sheep.
He would leave the sheep to graze and play in the open field.
A little way off, people were working in the fields.
The boy felt like playing a joke on them.
So he shouted loudly, so that the people would hear him.
“A wolf has come… a wolf has come… save me, come quickly… somebody come…”
Hearing this, the people rushed to the boy's help.
But there was no wolf there.
The boy looked at them and smiled quietly to himself.
The people comforted the boy and went back.
The next day too, the shepherd boy called out for the people to hear.
“Oh, come, save me, the wolf has come… the wolf!”
Hearing the boy's crying, the people came running.
How could they see a wolf when there was none?
The boy laughed inside himself.

To the boy this seemed like great fun.
After some time a real wolf came.
It caught the sheep and began to eat them.
“Oh no… come quickly… the wolf really has come… it is eating my sheep… save me!”
He shouted this again and again, frightened and weeping.

The people who heard it thought the boy was lying again.
“He is yelling just to make fools of us,” they said.
And so nobody came to the boy's help.
