Anansi the Spider and the World's Stories

Anansi the Spider was a small creature, but he was very smart. He loved stories more than anything. In the old days, all the stories belonged to Nyame, the Sky God. Anansi wanted to share the stories with everyone in the world. He went to Nyame and asked, "Please, can I have your stories?"

Nyame looked down at tiny Anansi. He laughed! "You are just a little spider," Nyame said. "If you want my stories, you must bring me three very difficult things. First, bring me Onini the Python. Second, bring me Mmoboro the Hornet Swarm. Third, bring me Osebo the Leopard."

Anansi was not scared. He thought and thought. First, he found Onini the Python. Anansi said, "Everyone thinks you are not as long as a palm tree. Can you stretch out and let me measure you?" Onini stretched, and Anansi quickly tied him to a stick.

Next, Anansi took a big leaf and put some rain on it. He told the hornets, "It is raining! Come into my calabash for shelter." The hornets flew inside, and Anansi quickly closed the lid.

Finally, Anansi dug a deep hole. He waited for Osebo the Leopard to fall in. When Osebo fell, Anansi pretended to help him out, but tied him up instead.

Anansi brought all three difficult things to Nyame. Nyame was very surprised! He gave all the stories to Anansi. And that is how Anansi the Spider shared stories with the world.
